Amazing Bern Onion Festival


Every year, on Monday of fouth week of November, "Zibelemärit" or Onion festival is celebrated in the Swiss capital, Bern, "Zibelemärit" is a German word which stands "Zwiebelmarkt" or onion market. This is an annual festival being celebrated in the city of Bern before winter. Approximately 600 booths are involved in displaying and selling souvenirs made from onions.It took nearly 46 tonnes of onions last year to attract visitors . Each souvenir is unique, interesting, creative and hand crafted and give a plesant look of its own. For example there are alarm clocks, dolls, a bunch of flowers, animals, and many other forms. The price also varies from CHF 5 to tens of Swiss francs.
























There is no clue when n where onion festival was originated but Garlic Festival has been around since the mid-19th century.. At that time, farmers who come from neighboring regions, or now called the city of Fribourg,come to Bern to sell their agricultural products directly in the feast of St. St Martin which falls on November 11. In the city of Bern .There they make unique onion sculptures to attract residents of Bern. According to another theory , onion festival is celebrated as a thanks giving ceremony in Bern as people of Fribourg helped them during fires in 1405. However, one version says that city Friibourg got the exclusive rights to open its market in Bern after their military provide assistance in the Burgundian War that occurred between the years 1474-1477.
